Tours

Looking across the vast plains of Western Oklahoma, it is easy to understand the connection to the American Bison (Bison bison), commonly referred to as “buffalo”, and why it was chosen as the state animal. At OK Buffalo Tours, we will bring you close enough to these shaggy, but noble beasts to make it an experience you won’t soon forget. We will share the excitement of observing this unique wildlife experience, as well as the history and culture it has so impacted. Get aboard our custom built tour trailer for an exciting and informative ride as we travel through native plants and grasses that have provided abundant grazing for thousands of years. You will enjoy this close-up encounter with these incredible animals from the safety and comfort of our tractor-pulled trailer. Listen for the grunts and groans of mothers as they communicate with their offspring. Watch the herd behavior as individuals move about in the established hierarchy. Older calves often band together in playful nursery groups. This is a great time to observe the physical prowess and unique make up of these remarkable animals from just a few feet away!

Keep an eye out for the fast and long legged Chaparral, or roadrunner, (Geococcyx californianus) as he quickly struts away for cover. Notice the agility of the Ring-tailed Hawk (Circus cyaneus) as he races and flirts with the wind, his piercing eyes scanning for his next prey. The occasional Black-tailed Jackrabbit, actually a hare, (Lepus californicus) is an interesting and peculiar sight. Loping along with its unique gait, his giant ears attached to a lanky body, he enamored the early European explorers. Don’t be surprised by the sudden flush and thumping wings of a covey of Bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) as they explode from their cover in the bluestem grass. During the summer months the Texas Horned Lizard, or horny toad, (Phrynosomo cornutum) is a common sight near ant dens as he gorges in the sun. The ever-present Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta) is easy to spot with its brilliant yellow breast and melodious call. Watch the male Scissor-tailed Flycatcher (Muscivora forficata), the state bird, court his mate with noisy chatter and a series of short, abrupt dives and climbs, ending the sequence by falling into two or three consecutive somersaults. Numerous songbirds, hawks, butterflies and small reptiles frequent the area. Deer, raccoons, badgers, opossums, armadillos, porcupines, owls and coyotes are also occasional visitors, but are seldom seen until nightfall. Every trip is a fun and unique experience that is sure to stir up an appetite for the tasty cookout waiting back at the Conestoga Pavilion!
